How to Adjust the Door Closer?

How to Adjust the Door Closer?

As the manufacture of door closer with 20 years’ experience, the knowledge on how to adjust the door closer is very important and basic. We must clearly explain to our buyers how to install and use door closer well in order to keep long-term life time.

This article is mainly about the standard door closer with capacity of 45-65KG(EN3), but the process can be applied to many kinds of door closer also.

What we need to prepare before install:

Installation paper which includes in the packing box.
The screwdriver, if electrical screwdriver, please use light power.
Hex key
Appropriate wrench
A strong ladder to keep installer’s safety
To check the exiting door hinge function, it will affect the operation of door closer also.
To check the door closer surface whether any oil at the cover or middle nut and valves location. If yes, stop and apply for compensation from the direct seller.

What we need to focus on during the installation:

The installation process is not difficulty if u follow the tutorial paper or video (we have our YouTube channel). But here I also want to explain the following points:

To locate the adjustment valves side facing to the door hinge side, it is very important and easily ignored by many guys.
The location of door closer body is nearer to the door hinge, the opening power would be bigger, oppositely, it becomes weaker. The users can adjust in order to match their needs.
The arm has two parts, one is supporting part, and another is adjustment tube which can increase or shorten the length. The adjustment tube need to be 90° vertical to the door frame, and the angle between support part and adjustment tube is 30°-35°, keep in mind.
When it comes to adjust the screws, a little change goes a long way, so start with no more than 1/2 of a circle. Counter-clockwise to speed the door closer up, clock-wise is to slow it down.

Now needs to check the operation of the door by 10 times at least, and adjust again to find a perfect opening power feeling and closing operation. Usually if the door closes by 8 seconds, it is ok. Then the job is done well.

What else need to notice:

Do not screw out the adjustment valves which will cause the leakage and damage the closer.
If u just finish the oil painting of the door, please wait for 24 hours, and then go ahead for door closer installation. It is not good if to do at the same time.
To use the door closer suitable for the door weight, if the door weight is above the capacity, the door closer will be ruined easily after a short time. If the door weight is below the capacity, it will not have power when opening the door.

What problems always happen and how to solve?

Problem 1:

Sometimes we cannot adjust the speed, the closing speed is very quick and slamming always.

Solution:

If again adjust the valves, the situation is still existing. It approves the inside fitting of door closer has problem due to the assembly process. It is better to change and install a new one.

Problem 2:

What need to notice when use one hold-open door closer?

Solution:

The hold-open function for the standard door closer is always on 90 degree, so when you push the door to this degree, it cannot push more than 90°，or 110 °, if always more than, the inside mechanism will be ruined. When you open the door closer body, you will see the teeth of gear wears out already.

Problem 3:

What environment is suitable for door closer?

Solution:

Usually, the door closer can resist -35° to 70°. If used for the cold place, the door closer needs to use specialized anti-frozen hydraulic oil which can resist -60°. The user needs to purchase the suitable door closer.
